The annual Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir has been temporarily suspended due to adverse weather conditions. Authorities have decided to halt the pilgrimage starting tomorrow, August 3rd, 2025, prioritizing the safety of the devotees.
Heavy rainfall has lashed the region, causing damage to the Yatra routes and creating hazardous conditions. Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, cited these safety concerns and the need for urgent repairs as the primary reasons for the suspension. The Yatra has been suspended on both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes.
The Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), in coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir administration, has issued advisories requesting pilgrims not to proceed towards the Holy Cave until further instructions are released. The SASB has also assured that they will continuously monitor the weather and track conditions, and any decision to resume the Yatra will be taken only after a thorough assessment.
This disruption marks the second time the Yatra has been suspended this year due to inclement weather. Previously, the Yatra was called off on July 17th, 2025, because of heavy rains at the twin base camps in Kashmir.
Despite these suspensions, over 4 lakh pilgrims have already paid their respects at the ice lingam of Lord Shiva at the 3,880-meter-high cave shrine since the 38-day pilgrimage commenced on July 3rd. As of August 1st, a total of 1,44,124 pilgrims had departed from the Jammu base camp for the Valley since the first batch was flagged off by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on July 2nd. So far, more than 3.93 lakh pilgrims have visited the Holy Amarnath Cave Shrine during this year's pilgrimage. Last year, over 5.10 lakh pilgrims visited the cave shrine.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the annual 'Chhari Mubarak' procession, the holy mace of Lord Shiva. The procession will commence from the Amareshwar Temple in Srinagar on August 4th and is scheduled to reach the cave shrine on the morning of August 9th, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan, when the Yatra is scheduled to conclude.
Authorities are closely monitoring the weather situation and working to repair the damaged tracks. An update regarding the resumption of the Yatra is expected following an improvement in weather conditions and completion of the necessary repairs. Officials have confirmed that the Yatra will resume via the Baltal route only, starting Friday, August 1. The Pahalgam axis has been temporarily closed for urgent repair and maintenance.
Pilgrims who have come from outside for the Yatra are housed in the high-security Bhagwati Nagar base camp for their further journey to the twin base camps of Pahalgam and Baltal after reviewing the weather situation.
