In the latest developments concerning India-Russia relations, both External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval are reportedly planning trips to Russia this month. These visits underscore the continuing high-level exchanges between the two countries and the strategic importance of the India-Russia partnership.
EAM S. Jaishankar's Engagements
While specific dates for the upcoming visit have not been officially announced, it's worth noting that EAM Jaishankar recently concluded a visit to Russia from December 25-29, 2023. During that trip, he met with President Vladimir Putin, Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Discussions spanned a wide array of topics, including trade and economic cooperation, energy, defense, connectivity, cultural exchanges, and regional cooperation.
During his December visit, Jaishankar emphasized the stability and strength of India-Russia relations, highlighting their exceptional nature compared to the fluctuating relationships between other major global powers over the past 70 years. He also addressed global and regional developments, including multilateral cooperation. Three documents were signed relating to the Kudan Kulam Nuclear Power Plants, cooperation in pharmaceuticals and healthcare, and foreign office consultations. Jaishankar also engaged with Indian diaspora, Indologists, students, and teachers, further cementing people-to-people connections.
NSA Ajit Doval's Role
NSA Ajit Doval's planned visit to Russia follows a previously scheduled trip in May 2025, which was called off due to illness. Doval was expected to attend the 13th International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues. This meeting is a significant forum for discussing regional security matters and strategic cooperation.
Doval has previously engaged with Russian President Vladimir Putin, meeting with him in St. Petersburg in September 2024. During that meeting, Doval conveyed a message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding peace efforts related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Doval has also met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). These discussions highlight Doval's crucial role in managing India's strategic relationships with both Russia and China.
Significance of the Visits
The planned visits by EAM Jaishankar and NSA Doval to Russia indicate the importance India places on its strategic partnership with Russia. The discussions are expected to cover a range of topics, including economic cooperation, defense, and regional security. Given the current geopolitical landscape, these meetings provide an opportunity to strengthen ties and address shared concerns.
