In a shocking incident, Pintu Chakraborty, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) panchayat leader, was brutally hacked to death in West Bengal's Hooghly district. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening near the Kanaipur autorickshaw stand. According to police reports, a group of unidentified assailants attacked Chakraborty with sharp weapons.
Chakraborty, a member of the TMC-led Kanaipur Panchayat Committee and a businessman, was attacked while returning home from his gas agency shop and on his way to a party meeting. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers struck him multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Locals rushed Chakraborty to a nearby hospital, but he was later transferred to Kolkata's SSKM Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead.
The police have launched an investigation into the murder and are actively trying to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. A senior police officer stated that an investigation is underway.
The incident has sparked outrage and condemnation from TMC leaders. State Transport Minister Snehasis Chakraborty, who visited the hospital, expressed his grief, stating that he and the deceased were close, having studied together. He said he was unable to comprehend the reason behind the murder and hoped that the police would arrest the culprits soon.
Opposition leaders have alleged that the attack was a result of internal conflict within the Trinamool Congress.
The murder of Pintu Chakraborty is the latest in a string of political killings in West Bengal. According to reports, six leaders from the ruling party have been murdered in different parts of the state this month. These killings have occurred amid rising political tension in the lead-up to the upcoming assembly elections, expected in eight to nine months. Political killings have happened in South 24 Parganas, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and several other places.
