Yashasvi Jaiswal's impressive century has significantly boosted India's chances of leveling the Test series against England. On Day 3 of the fifth and final Test at The Oval, the 23-year-old opener struck his fourth Test century against England, and his sixth overall, putting the visitors in a strong position.
Jaiswal's innings was not without its moments of fortune, as he was dropped three times on his way to scoring 118. However, his resilience and determination shone through as he helped India amass 396 in their second innings, setting England a daunting target of 374 runs to win.
Earlier in the day, Jaiswal shared a crucial 107-run partnership with nightwatchman Akash Deep, who contributed a gritty 66, taking India to a commanding position. Ravindra Jadeja (56) and Washington Sundar (53) also added valuable runs, further solidifying India's total.
Jaiswal's century was his second of the series, with the first one coming in the opener at Headingley. His consistent performance throughout the series has established him as a key player in the Indian batting lineup. His affinity for playing against England was also noted, with commentators highlighting his remarkable record against the English side. After reaching his century, Jaiswal celebrated by taking off his helmet and gloves, blowing kisses to the dressing room, and making a heart gesture with his hand.
The century also propelled India to a historic milestone, equaling the record for the most centuries scored by a team in a single Test series. Indian batters have collectively scored 12 centuries in the series against England, surpassing their previous record of 11 centuries in a series against the West Indies in 1978. India now joins Australia, Pakistan and South Africa as the teams with the joint-most hundreds scored in a single Test series.
England ended Day 3 at 50/1, with Mohammed Siraj dismissing Zak Crawley with a sensational yorker. They still need 324 runs to win the match and seal the series, while India needs 9 wickets to level the series. The stage is set for an exciting final two days of the Test match. Josh Tongue was the pick of the England bowlers with 5-125, while Gus Atkinson took 3-127.
