Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate Bengaluru's Yellow Line Metro on August 10, 2025. The announcement was made by BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, who expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for prioritizing infrastructure development in the city. The inauguration ceremony is expected to be held at Shalini Ground in Jayanagar 5th Block.
The Yellow Line, also known as the RV Road–Bommasandra Line, spans 19.15 km and connects RV Road to Bommasandra through Electronics City in southern Bengaluru. The line features 16 stations and is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion, particularly at the Silk Board Junction, benefiting approximately 8 lakh commuters daily.
The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) has granted statutory safety clearance to the Yellow Line, paving the way for the commencement of operations. However, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) must address certain conditions outlined by the CMRS during the inspection before commercial operations can begin. These conditions pertain to various technical and safety aspects that must be rectified or fulfilled. Once these requirements are met, BMRCL will submit a compliance report to the CMRS, after which final approval will be granted.
Initially, the Yellow Line will operate with three driverless trains running every 25 minutes. A senior BMRCL official stated that all 16 stations will be operational. BMRCL currently has three trains at its Hebbagodi depot for the Yellow Line, with a fourth train set expected to arrive soon. Services on the Yellow Line will initially operate with only three trains, while a fourth train is expected to join the fleet soon.
The Yellow Line project, built at a cost of Rs 5,056.99 crore, aims to alleviate traffic congestion, especially at the infamously congested Silk Board Junction. Tejasvi Surya believes that expanded public transport like the Metro offers the only lasting remedy to the city's notorious traffic problems.
In addition to inaugurating the Yellow Line, Prime Minister Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the 44.65-km Phase-3 expansion of the Bengaluru Metro. The Phase-3 expansion, also known as the Orange Line, is a project to expand the city's metro network. The project includes two lines and 31 stations, with an estimated completion date by the end of 2029. Phase 3 will primarily serve underserved areas along Magadi Road and the western portion of the Outer Ring Road (ORR).
The Union Cabinet approved the Rs 15,611-crore Phase-3 expansion within the first 100 days of Modi 3.0. The two new lines will connect JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura (Hebbal) and Hosahalli to Kadabagere, with a portion also passing through Gorguntepalya, Magadi Road, and Mysuru Road. A significant part of the project will involve a double-decker viaduct, where metro tracks will be built above existing roads and flyovers to optimize space.
Union Minister for Home and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar said, “I am pleased to announce that the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India has kindly agreed to inaugurate the Yellow Line and lay the foundation stone for Phase-3 on August 10”. Tejasvi Surya called the occasion a “landmark moment for Bengaluru South,” and expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for prioritising public transport in the region. He added that the combined projects are expected to benefit nearly 25 lakh residents in his constituency and surrounding areas, enhancing overall urban mobility in Bengaluru.
The Yellow Line was originally scheduled to open in 2021 but faced multiple delays due to disruptions in the supply of metro coaches. The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) conducted an inspection in July 2025, thoroughly examining all critical systems to ensure operational readiness and safety compliance.
