Air India has issued an apology and initiated a comprehensive investigation after passengers reported spotting cockroaches on a flight from San Francisco to Mumbai. The incident occurred on flight AI180, which included a stopover in Kolkata.
According to an official statement, two passengers were "unfortunately bothered by the presence of a few small cockroaches" on board. The airline's cabin crew promptly relocated the affected passengers to other seats within the same cabin, ensuring their comfort.
During the flight's scheduled fuel stop in Kolkata, the Air India ground crew conducted a deep cleaning process to address the issue. The aircraft subsequently departed on time for Mumbai.
Air India acknowledged that despite regular fumigation efforts, insects can sometimes enter an aircraft during ground operations. The airline has committed to undertaking a comprehensive investigation to determine the source and cause of the incident and implement measures to prevent recurrence.
The airline reiterated its commitment to ensuring onboard hygiene and passenger comfort across its fleet. An Air India spokesperson stated, "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to the passengers".
This incident occurs amidst a challenging period for the Tata Group-owned carrier. Air India has been dealing with numerous operational challenges, including delays, service complaints, and maintenance issues. The airline is also facing scrutiny following a recent crash involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner in June, and a July audit revealing safety breaches. Additionally, other recent incidents include a flight rerouted due to high cabin temperatures and another returning to its origin airport due to a burning smell.
Past incidents involving pests on Air India flights have also been reported. In 2014, an Air India aircraft was fumigated after a rat was reportedly spotted on board.
To maintain hygienic conditions, pest control services adopt comprehensive strategies, especially in sensitive areas like kitchens, targeting common pests such as cockroaches, ants, rodents, and flies with eco-friendly and safe methods. These services include regular inspections, customized treatment plans, and preventive measures for both residential and commercial spaces.
