The box office clash between Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2 has been closely watched, with Ajay Devgn's action-comedy sequel ultimately taking the lead. While both films attracted attention, Son of Sardaar 2 has outperformed Dhadak 2 in the opening weekend.
Son of Sardaar 2, directed by Vijay Kumar Arora and starring Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur, had a decent opening weekend, earning ₹24.75 crore in India. The film's daily collections showed steady growth, with ₹7.25 crore on day 1, ₹8.25 crore on day 2, and ₹9.25 crore on day 3. However, the film experienced a significant drop on its first Monday, earning only ₹2.50 crore, bringing its four-day total to ₹27.25 crore. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film managed to perform reasonably well, driven by Devgn's star power and the franchise's appeal. The movie follows Jassi (Ajay Devgn) as he travels to Scotland to reconcile with his wife but becomes entangled in a mob conflict and a chaotic Sikh wedding. He must navigate cultural chaos to save hostages and his marriage.
Dhadak 2, starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, struggled to keep up, earning ₹11.4 crore in its opening weekend. The film, directed by Shazia Iqbal, saw a slight increase in collections over the weekend, with ₹3.5 crore on day 1, ₹3.75 crore on day 2, and ₹4.15 crore on day 3. However, it experienced a steep fall on its first Monday, earning only ₹1.4 crore, bringing its total domestic collection to ₹12.8 crore. Despite positive reviews, Dhadak 2 failed to translate critical acclaim into box office success. The film is considered a spiritual sequel to the 2018 film Dhadak, which starred Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter. The original Dhadak had a much stronger opening, earning ₹39.19 crore in its first four days, three times the amount Dhadak 2 has earned in the same period.
Both films are facing tough competition from Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's romantic drama, Saiyaara, which was released on July 18. Saiyaara has continued its strong performance, crossing ₹300 crore in India. Even on its 17th day, the film collected ₹8 crore. Mahavatar Narsimha has also emerged as a strong contender, further impacting the business of Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2.
The original Son of Sardaar, released in 2012, was one of Ajay Devgn's highest-grossing films, earning ₹105 crore in its lifetime. As Son of Sardaar 2 moves forward, it needs to maintain momentum to achieve similar success.
