Kareena Kapoor has previously addressed the intense media scrutiny surrounding her sister Karisma Kapoor's marriage to Sunjay Kapur, which ultimately ended in a controversial divorce in 2016. The couple's wedding in 2003 was a high-profile event, but their separation after 11 years of marriage led to a public and acrimonious legal battle.
In past interviews, Kareena spoke about the difficulties Karisma and Sunjay faced, especially with constant media attention. According to Masala.com, Kareena was quoted saying, “So much has been written about it. So many of our well-wishers had predicted doomsday for the marriage. But we knew it can be sorted out, and it was”. She added, “Come on, which marriage doesn't have problems? But if the entire crisis is up for public debate, it naturally becomes harder to solve the tangle”. Kareena also mentioned that "My sister and Sanjay love each other. Sure, they had problems. But they were aggravated due to constant media attention. The prying became unbearable when cameras followed them to Goa, where they had gone for a patch-up holiday”.
The Times of India reported that Kareena shared her thoughts "without going into details or adding to the drama," stating, "It is such a personal thing. Both Karisma and I haven't spoken about it at all. How I support my sister is no one's concern". She added, "I'm very happy that people are concerned about her because she is a public figure, and I respect that. But people are also writing 500 versions of the matter (Karisma's personal life), when no one knows the truth".
Karisma and Sunjay's divorce involved serious allegations from both sides. Karisma accused Sunjay of domestic violence and dowry harassment, while Sunjay claimed that Karisma married him for his money. The divorce was finalized in 2016, with Karisma receiving custody of their two children, Samaira and Kiaan. As part of the settlement, Sunjay was to purchase bonds worth Rs 14 crore for the children, providing a monthly interest, and transfer ownership of his father's house in Khar to Karisma.
Sunjay Kapur passed away on June 12, 2025, at the age of 53, due to a heart attack. Following his death, Sunjay's mother, Rani Kapur, has alleged foul play and raised concerns about decisions made within the Sona Group, a company associated with the Kapur family. There have also been reports that Karisma is demanding a share in Sunjay's estate, though this remains unconfirmed.
Despite the past turmoil, Kareena and Saif Ali Khan were seen visiting Karisma after the news of Sunjay's death. An old video of Kareena at Karisma and Sunjay's wedding resurfaced online, drawing mixed reactions and highlighting the complex history between the families.
Randhir Kapoor, Karisma's father, had always been vocal about his disapproval of Sunjay. In an earlier interview, he called Sunjay "a third-class man" and stated he never wanted Karisma to marry him.
