In the wake of the devastating cloudburst and subsequent flash floods in the Dharali area of Uttarkashi district, the Uttarakhand health department has been placed on high alert. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed the health department to take immediate action to ensure the well-being of those affected.
Health Secretary Dr. R Rajesh Kumar has been spearheading the efforts to provide medical assistance to the victims. Medical teams have already reached Dharali, providing on-the-spot treatment to the injured. Additional medical teams are expected to join the relief efforts soon.
Dr. Kumar emphasized the department's commitment to taking swift and concrete measures in response to the disaster. He stated that arrangements have been made in hospitals, teams are active on the ground, and mental health aspects are being taken seriously. Three psychiatrists have been dispatched to the Dharali area to provide counseling and psychological support to the victims. These doctors will work with the local administration and visit relief camps to communicate with the people.
To ensure adequate medical facilities, Dr. Kumar inspected Doon Hospital and Coronation District Hospital in Dehradun. He thoroughly reviewed the emergency services, ICUs, general wards, staff presence, and availability of equipment in these hospitals. Clear instructions were given to the hospital administration to ensure that there would be no shortage of medical facilities for patients. Chief Minister Dhami has also given clear instructions that no injured or needy person should be deprived of treatment.
Beds have been reserved in various hospitals across the state for victims and critically injured patients, including Doon Medical College, Coronation Hospital and AIIMS Rishikesh. Doon Medical College has reserved 150 general beds and 50 ICU beds. Coronation District Hospital has 80 general beds and 20 ICU beds. AIIMS Rishikesh has reserved 50 general beds and 20 ICU beds.
All districts' Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) and disaster response teams have been placed on alert. The 108 ambulance service is active 24/7 to ensure patients can be taken to hospitals immediately if needed.
According to the Health Secretary, all necessary arrangements have been completed in Doon Medical College and Coronation Hospital in Dehradun. These hospitals are fully prepared from a disaster management perspective. Adequate deployment of doctors, nursing staff, and paramedical personnel has also been ensured.
The cloudburst in the upper catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river caused a massive flash flood in Uttarkashi district. The floods hit hotels and residential buildings in Dharali, destroying homes and infrastructure. Rescue operations are underway, with the Indian Army, ITBP, NDRF, and SDRF involved. As of August 6, 2025, at least five people have died, and many are still missing. Around 190 people have been rescued.
