Selena Gomez recently shared insights into how her enduring friendship with Taylor Swift began, revealing that their initial connection stemmed from both dating Jonas Brothers members. In an appearance on the "Therapuss with Jake Shane" podcast on August 7, 2025, Gomez explained that she dated Nick Jonas, while Swift dated Joe Jonas.
Gomez, 33, told host Shane, 25, that she and Swift, 35, "bonded over the breakup". "She and I like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other because it was really sweet," Gomez stated. She added that she was around 15 and Swift was about 18 during that time, reminiscing about Swift's "crazy curly" hair and the numerous bracelets she wore.
According to Gomez, she and Swift "didn't know what we were doing" back then. "At that age, we became best friends and bonded over the breakup, as girls do,” Gomez explained. Their friendship has persisted through many "ups and downs" in the years that followed.
Gomez also shared a specific memory of Swift playing "Love Story" for her in a hotel room before its official release. "It was one of those songs I instantly heard and thought that this was one of the most beautiful songs ever," Gomez recalled. She remembered Swift's uncertainty about whether it would be the first single, highlighting the intimacy of that early sharing of music.
Now, over a decade later, Gomez and Swift remain close friends and prominent figures in the entertainment industry. Both have publicly supported each other’s endeavors, from award shows to Gomez's engagement to Blanco. Swift even jokingly declared that she would be the flower girl at Gomez's wedding. Gomez also clarified that she, Swift, and the Jonas Brothers "all know and love each other now".
