The timeless romantic drama "Parineeta," is set to return to Indian cinemas on August 29, 2025, marking its 20th anniversary. This special re-release celebrates two decades of the film's enduring legacy, commemorates 20 years of Vidya Balan's remarkable journey in Indian cinema, and marks 50 glorious years of Vinod Chopra Films.
"Parineeta," adapted from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's iconic 1914 Bengali novel, has been meticulously restored in 8K resolution, with soundtracks remastered in 5.1 surround sound. Vinod Chopra Films has undertaken a comprehensive restoration of its entire film library, a process that took over four years to complete. The film has been restored by Prasad Film Labs.
Rekha, who makes a special appearance in the film for the song "Kaisi Paheli," has shared her thoughts on the re-release and the song's enduring appeal. She described "Kaisi Paheli" as more than just a song, calling it a mood, a vibe, and a metaphor for life. She reminisced about the song's atmospheric quality, noting that it reminded her of times gone by and the enigma of a woman who owns her narrative. Rekha Ji said that even 20 years ago, the composition stood out with rare poetry, unlike most songs of that time.
Vidya Balan, who made her Bollywood debut with "Parineeta," has also expressed her excitement about the film's re-release. She recalled listening to "Piyu Bole" for the first time and knowing it was something special, filled with a softness and innocence that mirrored her own feelings at the time. Watching the trailer now, the melody brought back memories of shooting scenes with Pradeep Sarkar, who would act out moments and expect the actors to follow. She expressed her gratitude to Pradeep Sarkar and Vinod Chopra for believing in her, acknowledging that she owes much of who she is as an actor to this film.
Saif Ali Khan also remembered the film as a turning point. Sanjay Dutt said Girish was his first Bengali character, and he was very happy to play it and that he loves the Bengali culture.
The re-release of "Parineeta" is not only a nostalgic trip for long-time fans but also an opportunity for a new generation to discover the film's timeless charm. The film captures the vibrant world of 1960s Calcutta, a city brimming with music, literature, poetry, and romance. "Parineeta" is a tale of innocent passion and true love intertwined with self-respect, brought to life with breathtaking clarity, vivid color palettes, and a soul-stirring soundtrack.
The film also stars Raima Sen and Dia Mirza. The music, directed by Shantanu Moitra with lyrics by Swanand Kirkire, remains evergreen, with songs like "Piyu Bole," "Kasto Mazza," and "Kaisi Paheli Zindagani" continuing to resonate with audiences.
"Parineeta" will be re-released in select PVR INOX cinemas across India for one week only, starting August 29, 2025.
