A tragic accident in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, has claimed the lives of a mother and her daughter, days apart, after they were struck by a speeding Mahindra Thar. The heart-wrenching incident has sparked public outrage, raising serious concerns about road safety and reckless driving in the city.

On August 9, 2025, Rebati Raul, along with her eight-year-old daughter Reshma and son Mahi, were hit by a Thar SUV near Patrapada V2 while crossing the road. The family was returning home after celebrating Raksha Bandhan at their uncle's house in Patia. Reshma died on the spot, while Rebati and Mahi were rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses reported that the Thar was allegedly racing with a black Scorpio on National Highway-16 towards Khordha when the accident occurred. The speeding Thar reportedly rammed into the family as they were crossing the road after disembarking from a bus. The impact of the collision caused severe injuries to Rebati and claimed the life of her young daughter instantly.

Rebati had been fighting for her life at AIIMS Bhubaneswar since the accident. Sadly, on August 11, 2025, she succumbed to her injuries, just days after losing her daughter. Mahi, her son, is still undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

The incident has triggered widespread condemnation and protests from the local community. Irate locals and slum residents blocked the National Highway at Patrapada, burning tires and demanding the construction of a foot overbridge at the accident site. They are also calling for immediate and strict action against the driver responsible for the tragedy. The protesters claim that Patrapada is a busy junction on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar with heavy traffic, making it dangerous for pedestrians to cross the road.

Police have seized the Thar involved in the accident from Jatni, but the driver's identity remains unknown. Investigations are ongoing, and a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the accused. Authorities are using CCTV footage to gather more information about the incident and identify the driver.

The tragic loss of Rebati and Reshma Raul has deeply affected the community and highlighted the urgent need for improved road safety measures in Bhubaneswar. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of protecting vulnerable road users. Authorities are facing increasing pressure to ensure justice for the victims and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
