The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is urging all driving licence (DL) holders and registered vehicle owners to update their mobile numbers through Aadhaar authentication. This move is aimed at improving road safety and ensuring effective communication regarding traffic violations and penalties.

Why Update Your Mobile Number?

  • Effective Communication: Updating your mobile number ensures that you receive timely notifications about e-challans, penalties, and other important updates related to your vehicle and driving license.
  • Tackling Traffic Violators: The primary goal of this initiative is to address the issue of traffic violators who evade fines and penalties by using outdated information. By updating the database, the ministry aims to track repeat offenders and ensure that penalties are issued and collected promptly.
  • Reducing Unpaid Fines: A significant amount of unpaid e-challans, totaling over ₹12,000 crore, is attributed to outdated data in the Sarathi and Vahan databases. Modernizing these databases with current contact information will streamline the fine collection process.
  • Avoiding Penalties: Failure to update your information may lead to consequences such as suspension or cancellation of your DL or RC, as well as increased insurance premiums.

How to Update Your Mobile Number

While specific details on the update process through Aadhaar authentication are still emerging, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways offers online facilities to update mobile numbers in the Vahan and Sarathi portal. Here’s a general guide on how you can update your mobile number:

  1. Visit the Parivahan Sewa Portal: Go to the official website: parivahan.gov.in.
  2. Navigate to Online Services: Select "Online Services" and then choose either "Driving Licence Related Services" or "Vehicle Related Services," depending on whether you want to update your mobile number for your DL or RC.
  3. Select Your State: Choose your state from the dropdown menu.
  4. Find the Option to Update Mobile Number: Look for an option to update your mobile number. This might be under "Update Contact Information" or a similar heading.
  5. Enter Required Details: You will need to enter your DL number or vehicle registration number, date of birth, and other relevant information.
  6. Authenticate with Aadhaar (if required): Follow the instructions to authenticate your identity using Aadhaar, if prompted. This may involve entering your Aadhaar number and receiving an OTP on your registered mobile number.
  7. Submit and Verify: After entering the required information and completing the Aadhaar authentication (if applicable), submit the form and verify your new mobile number through an OTP sent to your updated number.

The Parivahan Sewa Portal

The Parivahan Sewa portal is a digital initiative by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to modernize and streamline transport-related services. It offers a wide range of services, including:

  • Vehicle-related services: Registration, permits, taxes, and other vehicle-related documents.
  • Driver-related services: Applications, renewals, and other driver-specific tasks.

The portal is built around two main systems:

  • Vahan: Manages all vehicle-related services.
  • Sarathi: Handles all services related to drivers and driving licenses.

Benefits of the Updated System

  • Improved Accuracy: Ensures that the details in the Vahan and Sarathi portal are complete, accurate, and up to date.
  • Efficient Communication: Facilitates efficient communication for issuing penalties, e-challans, and other government actions.
  • Reduced Evasion: Helps in tracking repeat offenders and reducing the evasion of fines and penalties.
  • Convenience: Provides a convenient online platform for citizens to update their information without having to visit Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) frequently.

By updating their mobile numbers, vehicle owners and driving license holders can ensure they receive important notifications and contribute to a more robust and safer transportation system.
