In a surprising turn of events that sounds like a Bollywood movie plot, the relationship between actress Sridevi and filmmaker Boney Kapoor took a truly unconventional path. What began with Sridevi tying a rakhi to Boney Kapoor, a gesture meant to symbolize a brother-sister bond, ultimately culminated in marriage.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Sridevi was reportedly in a relationship with Mithun Chakraborty. After she starred in "Mr. India," produced by Boney Kapoor, rumors began circulating about a connection between Sridevi and the already-married filmmaker. To quell the rumors and reassure Mithun, Sridevi tied a rakhi on Boney Kapoor's wrist, seemingly solidifying a platonic relationship. According to one source, Boney Kapoor's mother was aware of her son's feelings for Sridevi and handed the actress a rakhi on a puja thali during Raksha Bandhan. However, this act did little to stop the rumors.

Despite the rakhi-tying, the gossip continued as Sridevi and Boney Kapoor worked together on several films. Boney Kapoor went out of his way to accommodate Sridevi, giving her extra money and creating special makeup rooms for her on set. In 1996, Sridevi and Boney Kapoor married in a private ceremony. The marriage caused a scandal in Bollywood because Boney Kapoor was already married to Mona Shourie Kapoor, with whom he had two children, Arjun and Anshula Kapoor.

Mona Shourie Kapoor remained silent about her husband's second marriage at the time.
