Mohan Bhagwat Addresses Stray Dog Problem: Balancing Animal Welfare with Public Safety through Population Control.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has weighed in on the issue of stray dogs, advocating for population control as the most effective solution. Speaking at a religious gathering in Cuttack, Bhagwat addressed the controversy surrounding a Supreme Court directive concerning the relocation of stray dogs in Delhi-NCR. He argued that simply moving the animals to shelters is not a viable long-term strategy.

Bhagwat, a veterinary science graduate, emphasized that all animals possess the right to live. He stated that regulating the population of stray dogs is the only way to solve the issue.

To illustrate his point about balance, Bhagwat drew an analogy from Indian tradition, referencing the practice of leaving milk for the calf while milking a cow. He described this as "the art of striking a balance between man and nature". Bhagwat further added that nature should be conserved by maintaining a balance between development and the environment.

Bhagwat's comments come in the wake of a Supreme Court order that directed authorities in Delhi and the National Capital Region to permanently relocate stray dogs from the streets to animal shelters. The court order has sparked debate, with some arguing that it is a necessary step to protect public safety, while others claim that it is inhumane and ineffective.

The RSS chief's suggestion of population control aligns with the views of many animal welfare organizations, which advocate for widespread spaying and neutering programs to manage stray animal populations humanely. Such programs, when implemented effectively, can gradually reduce the number of stray animals without resorting to drastic measures like relocation or culling.

Bhagwat's perspective highlights the need for a comprehensive and sustainable approach to managing the stray dog population, one that considers both animal welfare and public safety. By advocating for population control and drawing attention to the importance of balancing human needs with the well-being of animals, he has contributed to the ongoing dialogue on this complex issue.
