A crucial autism awareness seminar convened in Dehradun, bringing together experts who emphasized the urgent need for enhanced support systems for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The seminar, held on June 1, 2025, at Hotel Hyatt Centric, Dehradun, saw participation from over 200 people, including doctors, teachers, parents, and advocates. The event was organized with the efforts of the NRI cell constituted by the Uttarakhand government, NRI Uttarakhandis, and autism expert Anita Thapliyal Sharma from New Jersey, USA, in collaboration with the Uttarakhand Association of North America, Doon Nursing Home, and Doon Eye Care Centre.
The primary objective of the seminar was to educate parents, teachers, and medical professionals about ASD, stress the importance of early intervention, and promote inclusive education. Psychiatrist Jaya Navani participated in the seminar, highlighting the necessity of creating supportive environments for individuals with autism. Internationally renowned experts from the US and India were also present, sharing insights and strategies for autism awareness and inclusive care.
Anita Thapliyal Sharma, a global leader in autism education and advocacy, played a leading role in the seminar. Having attended the International NRI Uttarakhandi Conference in January, she expressed her concern over the rising cases of autism in Uttarakhand and the lack of awareness. This prompted her to organize the seminar to sensitize the people of Uttarakhand. Sharma emphasized that ASD is a neurological condition affecting communication, behavior, and social interaction. While it is a lifelong condition with varying degrees of severity, early diagnosis and intervention can significantly improve a person's ability to lead an independent life. She also stressed the crucial role of school teachers in identifying and supporting children with autism.
Secretary VK Suman praised Anita Sharma Thapliyal's initiative, noting her commitment to developmental work in a village in the Pauri district, which she adopted. He also acknowledged the contributions of other non-residents to the state's progress through the migrant cell, with the government providing them all possible support.
The seminar addressed key aspects of autism, including the significance of early diagnosis and intervention, therapeutic approaches to help autistic children develop essential skills, the role of educators and medical professionals in creating supportive environments, and the importance of building an inclusive society that encourages acceptance and integration. Discussions also covered Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and social skills training.
Several organizations in Dehradun are dedicated to supporting individuals with autism. Arunima, a project in Dehradun, runs an Assisted Living cum Training Programme for adults with Autism. The Autism Welfare Society in Dehradun is a Special School and Residential Centre that works with children and adults with Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. Samarth Assisted Living offers a loving setting customized to fit the particular requirements of people with autism.
The seminar concluded with a call for greater awareness, understanding, and support for individuals with autism. Experts emphasized that by bringing together medical professionals, educators, and caregivers, a more informed and supportive ecosystem can be created for those on the autism spectrum in Uttarakhand and beyond.
