A 19-year-old woman in Bihar, India, was allegedly raped inside an ambulance after she fainted during a Home Guard recruitment test on July 24, 2025. The incident occurred on the campus of the Bihar Military Police (BMP)'s third battalion in Bodh Gaya, where the physical test was being conducted.
During the physical endurance test, which is a standard part of the recruitment process, the woman collapsed and lost consciousness. Officials at the recruitment drive arranged for an ambulance to transport her to Magadh Medical College and Hospital for treatment. However, while en route to the hospital, she was allegedly sexually assaulted inside the ambulance.
After regaining consciousness at the hospital, the woman reported the incident to the police. She stated that she was only partially aware of the events in the ambulance due to her unconscious state but recalled that three to four men were present and assaulted her.
The police registered a First Information Report (FIR) and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the crime. A forensic team was also deployed to collect evidence, and nearby CCTV footage was reviewed. Within hours of the complaint, police arrested two suspects: the ambulance driver, Vinay Kumar, and a technician, Ajit Kumar. Police sources indicated that two additional suspects were taken into custody for interrogation. The arrested individuals have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita.
The incident has sparked outrage and strong criticism of the state's law and order situation. Union Minister Chirag Paswan expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order in Bihar and questioned the effectiveness of the state police. Opposition leaders, including Tejashwi Yadav, have also condemned the incident.
Authorities have completed the medical examination of the victim, and further action will be taken based on the findings of the reports. Gaya Senior Superintendent of Police stated that a chargesheet will be submitted after a swift investigation and that a prompt trial will be ensured to deliver strict punishment to those found guilty.
