A tragic stampede at the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar on Sunday, July 27, 2025, has resulted in the deaths of at least six people, with several others injured. The incident occurred due to a massive influx of devotees at the temple, a revered site located atop the Shivalik Hills.
Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey confirmed the fatalities and stated he was en route to the scene to assess the situation. According to initial reports, the stampede took place on the staircases leading to the main temple. The Mansa Devi Temple is considered one of the five sacred sites, or panch tirthas, of Haridwar, situated at a height of over 500 feet.
The tragedy occurred during the auspicious Hindu month of Sawan, a period that typically sees a surge in devotees visiting pilgrimage sites in Haridwar. The city is a significant destination for Shiv devotees and Kanwariyas, who gather water from the Ganga River during this time.
Rescue operations are underway, with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police working to provide assistance. Injured devotees are being transported to hospitals for treatment. Visuals from the scene depict ambulances rushing to the site and medical personnel attending to the injured.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed his condolences and stated that he is closely monitoring the situation and is in contact with local authorities.
