A 43-year-old man, identified as Dipak, was shot dead in the Bawana area of northwest Delhi on Friday morning while on a morning walk with his 10-year-old daughter. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 am in Nangal Thakran village, is suspected to be the result of an ongoing gang rivalry.
According to police reports, Dipak is the nephew of Manjeet Mahal, a notorious gangster currently incarcerated in Delhi's Tihar Jail. Police sources indicate that the murder may have been orchestrated by Kapil Sangwan, also known as Nandu, a gangster based in London. A long-standing feud exists between Mahal and Sangwan, and this rivalry has reportedly led to over a dozen deaths.
Initial investigations suggest that at least two unidentified assailants on a bike carried out the attack. They fired multiple rounds at Dipak, who died at the scene. His daughter sustained injuries to her hand from pellets during the shooting and is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. Dipak's father was also present during the incident, walking a short distance behind his son and granddaughter.
Authorities have registered a case of firing and murder and have formed multiple teams to apprehend the culprits. Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer-north) Hareshwar V Swami stated that there is strong reason to believe that Kapil Sangwan orchestrated the killing. A Red Corner Notice has already been issued against Sangwan, who is also accused of murdering a BJP leader two years prior, as well as involvement in other killings, including that of a builder in Paschim Vihar a few months ago.
While Dipak was related to a known gangster, police confirm that he himself had no criminal record. He was reportedly a B.Tech graduate involved in share trading.
The murder has reignited concerns about gang violence in Delhi. The ongoing feud between the Mahal and Sangwan gangs has caused significant unrest in the region. Just months prior to this incident, Rajkumar Daral, a close associate of Manjeet Mahal, was killed in Paschim Vihar in April. Police are working to contain the escalating violence.
The Special Cell of the Delhi Police is actively investigating the case, focusing on leads to identify and capture the shooters. Efforts are also underway to dismantle Sangwan's network, particularly within Delhi.
Dipak's body has been sent to Baba Sahab Ambedkar Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The investigation is ongoing.
