On August 15, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, marking his 12th consecutive speech, surpassing Indira Gandhi's record and placing him second only to Jawaharlal Nehru in the number of consecutive addresses.
This year, the Prime Minister's speech was his longest ever, clocking in at 105 minutes. He began at 7:33 AM and concluded at 9:18 AM. This surpassed his previous record of 98 minutes, which he set during his Independence Day address in 2024. In 2024, his 98-minute speech exceeded his 2016 speech, which lasted 96 minutes. His shortest Independence Day speech was in 2017, lasting approximately 56 minutes.
Modi's speeches have an average duration of 82 minutes, which is longer than any other Indian Prime Minister. Before Modi, Jawaharlal Nehru held the record for the longest Independence Day speech, which lasted 72 minutes in 1947.
In his address, the Prime Minister touched upon various issues, including national security, economic growth, technology, infrastructure, and social welfare. He also announced the launch of the Viksit Bharat Rozgaar Yojna, next-generation GST reforms, and the Sudarshan Chakra Mission.
The Viksit Bharat Rozgaar Yojna is a scheme worth ₹1 lakh crore aimed at providing employment opportunities for the youth. Under this scheme, individuals securing their first job in the private sector will receive ₹15,000 from the government. Modi also promised significant Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms as a "Diwali gift" to ease the tax burden and simplify compliance for businesses and citizens. Furthermore, the Prime Minister announced the launch of the "Sudarshan Chakra Mission" by 2035, with the goal of modernizing India's national security shield.
Modi expressed solidarity towards those affected by natural disasters and assured that relief and rehabilitation efforts were being carried out through coordinated efforts between the Central and State governments. He also stated that India had achieved its clean energy target five years ahead of schedule, reaching 50% non-fossil-based electricity capacity, demonstrating its commitment to clean energy.
The Prime Minister addressed cross-border terrorism, asserting that India has established a "new normal" of not differentiating between terrorists and those who support terrorism. He referenced Operation Sindoor as an expression of India's stance against terrorism.
In addition to these key announcements, Modi lauded the contribution of women's self-help groups in driving entrepreneurship and exports, emphasizing their significant economic impact. He also appealed to the youth and government departments to focus on producing Made-in-India jet engines for fighter aircraft.
