Samsung has commenced laptop manufacturing in India at its Greater Noida factory, marking a significant expansion of its production portfolio in the country. This development follows Samsung's existing production of feature phones, smartphones, wearables, and tablets at the same facility.
Sources familiar with the matter reported that Samsung plans to manufacture more devices in India. While an email query sent to Samsung regarding this matter did not elicit any response.
The commencement of laptop production in India aligns with the Indian government's push for technological advancement and further strengthens India's position as a key manufacturing hub for the South Korean tech giant. Samsung's Greater Noida plant, established in 1996, was one of the first global electronics manufacturing facilities in India.
Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently met with Samsung Southwest Asia President and CEO JB Park, and Corporate Vice President SP Chun. Following the meeting, Vaishnaw stated that "Samsung continues to expand manufacturing of its advanced technology devices in Bharat, driven by talent and innovation". This statement highlights Samsung's commitment to increasing its production capabilities in India.
Earlier this year, Samsung Electronics President and Head of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business TM Roh had announced the company's plans to begin laptop manufacturing at its Noida factory. He had also noted India's importance as a manufacturing base for Samsung, acknowledging the support received from both state and central governments. Roh affirmed the company's commitment to continued collaboration with the government to strengthen manufacturing in India.
Globally, India houses Samsung's second-largest mobile phone manufacturing unit. The company is also the second-largest exporter of handsets from India, trailing only Apple. While Samsung holds a strong position in the Indian smartphone market, it is yet to establish a significant presence in the laptop segment.
Samsung's decision to manufacture laptops in India could lead to increased competition in the Indian laptop market. It also reinforces the growing importance of India as a global manufacturing hub for electronics. The company has recently launched its Galaxy S24 series smartphone with a key focus on artificial intelligence capability in the device.
