The upcoming film The Bengal Files, directed by Vivek Agnihotri, has found itself at the center of controversy even before its release, sparking debates about historical accuracy, political pressure, and freedom of expression. The film, which explores the communal violence in Bengal during the 1940s, particularly the Great Calcutta Killings (Direct Action Day) and the Noakhali riots, was originally titled The Delhi Files.
Adding to the ongoing discussions, actor Saswata Chatterjee, who plays a significant role in the film, has shared his perspective on the matter. In an interview with YouTube channel The Wall, Chatterjee revealed that he was unaware of the title change until after the shooting was completed. "While the shooting was going on, the name of the film was Delhi Files and after the shooting was done, I came to know that the name was changed to Bengal Files. That is not in my hands," he stated. He also admitted to not knowing the reason behind the name change and would only understand it after watching the film.
Chatterjee also distanced himself from the historical debate surrounding the film. Emphasizing his role as an actor, he stated that it is not his responsibility to verify historical claims. "I liked a character and I played it. I am not a historian to think about what history says, and this is distorting history. It's not my job," Chatterjee said. He further added that if anyone feels that the film is misrepresenting Bengal, they should seek legal recourse rather than simply "making noise". Chatterjee also mentioned that he was not given the full story narration and only knew about his character when he joined the project. He said that he found the character amazing and it was a villain's character, which is rare for actors to play.
The controversy surrounding The Bengal Files extends beyond the title change. The trailer launch in Kolkata was reportedly cancelled due to "political pressure," with Agnihotri accusing authorities of creating hurdles. A senior Kolkata Police official stated that the organizers did not have the required amusement license for the screening. Furthermore, multiple FIRs have been filed against the film in West Bengal, alleging that it portrays the state in a negative light and misrepresents historical figures.
One specific point of contention is the film's portrayal of Gopal Chandra Mukherjee, a freedom fighter known for his resistance against mob violence during the 1946 riots. His grandson, Santanu Mukherjee, has filed a police complaint and a legal notice against Agnihotri, claiming that the film distorts his grandfather's identity and portrays him disrespectfully. Santanu Mukherjee objects to the film's reference to his grandfather as "Kashai" (butcher) and "Patha" (goat), deeming it inaccurate and insulting. While Agnihotri claims to have portrayed Gopal Mukherjee as a hero, Santanu insists that the film tarnishes his legacy.
The Bengal Files is the third film in Agnihotri's "Files" trilogy, following The Tashkent Files and The Kashmir Files. The film is slated to release on September 5, 2025.
