The day after an attack at her Civil Lines Camp Office, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has been given 'Z' level VIP security. The Union government has accorded the security cover to her, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has taken charge of her security.
On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Rekha Gupta was attacked during a Jan Sunwai (public hearing) meeting at her Civil Lines Camp Office. The accused, Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai Sakriya, 41, from Rajkot, Gujarat, allegedly entered the office posing as a complainant. According to those present, Sakriya approached her with some papers and then attacked her around 8:30 am, shortly after the meeting began. Delhi Police have registered a case under section 109(1) Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) (Attempt to murder, Imprisonment for 10 years, and fine). The accused has been sent to a five-day police remand.
Following the attack, Gupta was examined by doctors and is currently stable. She stated that she was initially in shock but is now feeling better. She also stated that the attack was a "cowardly attempt" on her work for the welfare of the people of Delhi and affirmed that such attacks would not break her spirit.
The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) described the assault as a "well-planned conspiracy to kill her". CCTV footage revealed that Khimji allegedly conducted a recce of the CM's residence in Shalimar Bagh and attempted the attack in a planned manner. The police are currently investigating the matter.
Delhi Police sources indicated that Sakriya's questioning and mobile phone records showed he had visited a temple in Ujjain before arriving in Delhi. A senior police officer stated that Sakriya saw Gupta's posters and a reel about her talking about stray dogs, which prompted him to attack her. Rajkot police reported that Sakriya had five cases registered against him between 2017 and 2024, including charges of voluntarily causing hurt, drunken misconduct, and criminal intimidation. Sakriya's mother stated that he was upset about the Supreme Court's order to round up stray dogs in Delhi-NCR and move them to shelters, as he loves dogs.
The 'Z' category security typically includes approximately 22 personnel, including personal security officers (PSOs), escorts, surveillance staff, and around eight static armed guards. This enhanced security cover is generally granted to high-profile political figures. The Delhi Police will bear the cost of the security.
A day after the attack, Rekha Gupta met with all seven BJP lawmakers from Delhi at her official residence. BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal shared images of the meeting and stated that the Chief Minister is healthy and dedicated to her work.
In the wake of the attack, the Delhi Police Commissioner, SBK Singh, has been replaced by Satish Golcha. The Delhi Police has also decided to assess the threat perception of the other ministers in the cabinet.
