The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted a raid on the Kolkata residence of TMC MLA Dr. Sudipto Roy on August 23, 2025, in connection with alleged financial irregularities at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dr. Roy, who formerly chaired the hospital's management committee, had previously been questioned in September 2024 regarding these irregularities. The investigation also touches upon the rape and murder of a doctor who had reported the financial issues.
The CBI's action is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Raids were also carried out at Dr. Roy's nursing home. Previously, in September 2024, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) also conducted raids at six locations in Kolkata, including Dr. Roy's residence, in connection with the same case. These raids included the Sithi residence of Dr. Roy, who is the TMC's Serampore MLA, the house of a medicine dealer, and four other locations. According to an ED officer, these raids were prompted by specific inputs related to the alleged financial irregularities at R.G. Kar Hospital.
Earlier in the investigation, the CBI arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the hospital, along with three associates. Ghosh faces charges related to a tender scam dating back to 2021. This scam came to light during a broader investigation into the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at the hospital on August 9, 2024. The incident sparked widespread outrage and protests.
Dr. Roy was questioned by the CBI in September 2024 concerning the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case. At the time, Dr. Roy was the president of the West Bengal Medical Council and in charge of the R.G. Kar Patient's Welfare Committee. The CBI searched Dr. Roy's house in the Sinthi area for over 90 minutes.
BJP MLA and West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari had accused Dr. Roy of misusing medical equipment from R.G. Kar hospital at his nursing home, replacing it with older equipment. Dr. Roy denied these allegations. He stated that he had built his nursing home gradually and welcomed anyone to verify his claims. He also mentioned his long association with R.G. Kar, where he was born and had worked.
In September 2024, the ED also searched multiple properties linked to Sandip Ghosh, the former R.G. Kar principal. The ED seized documents related to properties owned by Ghosh and his wife, including flats and houses in Kolkata and a farmhouse.
Following the surfacing of financial irregularities, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition by Ghosh challenging the Calcutta High Court's order to transfer the investigation to the CBI. Additionally, prohibitory orders were extended around R.G. Kar Hospital until September 30, banning dangerous weapons and any attempts to disturb the peace. The Supreme Court also charged the CISF with providing security for the hospital.
During their nearly 20-hour search operation, ED officials seized several documents from Dr. Roy's residences and nursing home. These documents are being analyzed to determine if Dr. Roy had any financial transactions or dealings with the hospital.
