Acclaimed filmmaker Priyadarshan, known for his comedies and collaborations with actors like Akshay Kumar, has announced his intention to retire from filmmaking after completing a few upcoming projects. These projects include "Haiwaan," "Hera Pheri 3," and his 100th film, which will star Mohanlal.
The director, currently 68 years old, revealed that he is feeling "tired" and hopes to step away from the filmmaking world once these commitments are fulfilled. In a recent interview, while in Kochi for the shoot of "Haiwaan," Priyadarshan shared details about the movie and his future plans.
"Haiwaan" is particularly noteworthy as it is the director's 99th film and is a remake of his 2016 movie, "Oppam". However, the remake will feature changes in the dialogues and screenplay. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan in lead roles, with Shriya Pilgaonkar and Saiyami Kher in pivotal roles. Adding to the excitement, Mohanlal, who starred in "Oppam," will make a cameo appearance in "Haiwaan," with Priyadarshan hinting that his character will surprise the audience.
Priyadarshan's 100th film, also featuring Mohanlal in the lead, is currently in the scripting stage, with shooting expected to commence next year.
Speaking about his frequent collaborations with Akshay Kumar, Priyadarshan said that it's all about comfort. He likened Kumar to Bollywood's Mohanlal. While he admitted that he doesn't typically revisit original films for sequels, he is making "Hera Pheri 3" due to persistent requests from producers.
The "Hera Pheri 3" project has faced its share of turmoil. There were reports of Paresh Rawal's exit from the film, which allegedly prompted Akshay Kumar to consider legal action. Priyadarshan mentioned that Akshay Kumar had bought the rights to the "Hera Pheri" franchise and that Paresh Rawal's decision to quit could cause Kumar financial losses. He also expressed his disappointment that Rawal did not discuss his decision before announcing his exit.
Despite the challenges, Suniel Shetty remains optimistic about "Hera Pheri 3". He expressed his excitement about working with Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, and Priyadarshan again.
Priyadarshan's departure will mark the end of an era in Indian cinema. He has delivered numerous memorable films across various genres and languages. His collaborations with Akshay Kumar have resulted in some of Bollywood's most beloved comedies. While his fans will undoubtedly miss his directorial expertise, they eagerly anticipate his final projects, including "Haiwaan," "Hera Pheri 3," and his 100th film with Mohanlal.
