The man accused of burning his wife alive in a horrific dowry-related crime in Greater Noida, India, was shot in the leg while attempting to escape police custody. Vipin Bhati, the husband of 28-year-old Nikki Bhati, was arrested after his wife succumbed to her injuries on Thursday in a Delhi hospital. Nikki had been admitted with severe burn injuries after allegedly being tortured and set ablaze by her in-laws at their home.
According to police reports, Vipin attempted to flee while being taken to recover a thinner bottle he allegedly used in the crime. Police stated that he tried to snatch a pistol from an officer near Sirsa Chauraha, prompting them to open fire after repeated warnings. A bullet struck Vipin in the leg, and he was subsequently re-apprehended.
The gruesome details of Nikki's death have sparked outrage and widespread condemnation. Reports indicate that Nikki was allegedly attacked in front of her young son and sister. Her six-year-old son recounted the horrifying incident, stating, "They poured something on my mother, slapped her, and then set her on fire with a lighter". Social media has been flooded with video clips purportedly showing Nikki being assaulted and dragged by her hair.
Nikki's father has alleged that her in-laws continued to harass her for dowry, despite the family fulfilling previous demands. According to NDTV, Nikki's sister filed a complaint, leading to Vipin's arrest, while authorities continue to search for other family members involved.
In a shocking display of remorselessness, Vipin Bhati reportedly stated after his arrest, "I have no remorse. I haven't killed her. She died on her own. Husband and wife often have fights. It is very common".
Nikki's father has welcomed the police action, asserting that "The police did the right thing. A criminal always tries to run, and Vipin was a criminal". He is demanding strict punishment for all those responsible for his daughter's death and has requested that the other accused individuals also be apprehended.
