The case of Nikki, a woman allegedly murdered for dowry in Greater Noida, has taken a disturbing turn as the prime accused, her husband Vipin, displayed a chilling lack of remorse following his arrest and a subsequent police encounter. Vipin is accused of burning his wife alive after she failed to meet a dowry demand of ₹36 lakh.
The horrific incident occurred in Sirsa village, where Nikki was allegedly subjected to brutal torture by her husband and in-laws. Disturbing videos have surfaced, showing Nikki being assaulted and dragged by her hair. Another video captures the chilling image of her limping down the stairs while engulfed in flames. Nikki's young son witnessed the ghastly act, telling reporters that his mother was attacked, "They poured something on my mother, slapped her and set her on fire with a lighter". Nikki's sister, Kanchan, who also resides in the same household after marrying Nikki's brother-in-law, reported that she and Nikki were being tortured for dowry. Kanchan also alleged that Nikki was hit in the neck and acid was thrown on her before she was set ablaze.
Following Nikki's death, Vipin was arrested. While being taken into custody to recover the inflammable liquid, he allegedly attempted to escape, even trying to snatch a pistol from an officer. Police opened fire, hitting him in the leg. Despite the severity of his alleged crime and the encounter, Vipin remained defiant. "I have no remorse. I haven't killed her. She died on her own. Husband and wife often have fights. It is very common,” he stated.
The police have arrested Vipin and are searching for other family members involved in the crime. An FIR has been lodged against Vipin, his brother Rohit Bhati, his mother Daya, and his father Satveer at Kasna Police Station.
Nikki's murder has sparked outrage and protests, with many demanding justice for the victim. Her sister, Kanchan, expressed her grief and demanded that the perpetrators be punished severely. "I want them to suffer the way they made my sister suffer," she said.
The incident highlights the persistent issue of dowry-related violence in India. Despite laws prohibiting the practice, dowry demands continue to plague many marriages, leading to harassment, torture, and, in the most extreme cases, death. This case serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address this social evil and ensure the safety and security of women.
