In Ludhiana, Punjab, a notorious gangster named Kartik Baggan was shot dead on Saturday night near Sundar Nagar Chowk. The assailants, who were riding motorcycles, opened fire on Baggan and his friend Sarvan. Baggan sustained four bullet injuries and died at the scene, while Sarvan was injured by a single gunshot but survived. The police are investigating the case, and an FIR has been lodged against unknown attackers.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (North) Davinder Chaudhary, Sarvan stated that the attackers approached from behind, making it difficult to identify them. Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area.
Kartik Baggan was a member of the Puneet Bains gang and was involved in multiple cases of murder, robbery, extortion, and violations of the Arms Act. He also had associations with other gangs in Ludhiana, including Shahrukh Sadiq, Rajesh Ludhiana, Sukh Khaira, and Sandeep Katoch. Baggan had a significant social media presence with a large following on Instagram, where he often showcased weapons and his lifestyle.
This was not the first attempt on Baggan's life. In June 2023, rivals had shot at him on Benjamin Road, but he survived that attack. After receiving treatment at Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) following the 2023 shooting, he reportedly escaped to avoid police custody. In 2022, members of the Shubham Arora gang were arrested for attempting to kill him.
Police sources believe that Baggan's murder is a result of ongoing gang rivalry in Punjab. Baggan and his gang had previously attacked rivals and created videos of these assaults.
In June 2022, Baggan was attacked by four men on two motorbikes on Benjamin Road. He was shot in the abdomen and taken to CMCH, where his condition was stabilized. His father stated that the attackers made a video call to Shubham Arora, a Youth Congress leader in jail, who instructed them to kill Baggan. Following that incident, Karan Kalia claimed responsibility for the crime on Facebook.
Following the June 2022 shooting, police registered a case against 12 individuals, including Karan Kalia and Shubham Mota. The charges included attempt to murder, criminal intimidation, rioting, and violations of the Arms Act.
After being discharged from CMCH in June 2022, Baggan, who was wanted in an attempted murder case, absconded from the hospital. Police had planned to arrest him after his treatment but failed to monitor his discharge.
