Karan Johar has reignited hope among fans regarding his ambitious period drama, Takht. In a recent interview, the filmmaker confirmed that the project is still in development, revealing that it remains a passion project close to his heart.

Takht, announced in early 2020, boasted an impressive ensemble cast, including Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Anil Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar, and Janhvi Kapoor. The film was set against the backdrop of the Mughal era, exploring the intense rivalry between brothers Aurangzeb and Dara Shikoh in their battle for succession to the throne. A teaser video, featuring an ornate throne, was released on February 1, 2020, with a planned Christmas 2021 release date. However, the film never made it to production.

In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Johar addressed the status of Takht, explaining that various factors had prevented the film from being realized. While he didn't delve into specifics, he assured fans that the project had not been abandoned. "It's a film on my table, and I will make it one day," he stated, instilling renewed optimism that the historical drama might eventually see the light of day.

Johar also lauded the screenplay of Takht, penned by Sumit Roy, calling it "the best screenplay that has come on my table." This statement underscores his deep emotional investment in the story and his clear intention to revisit the project when the timing is right.

The reasons behind shelving Takht were multifaceted. The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant delays, and the project also faced online backlash following Sushant Singh Rajput's death, which sparked debates about nepotism in Bollywood. Given that Takht featured several star children, the decision was made to postpone the film.

Originally planned with a budget of ₹250 crore, Takht was poised to be one of the most expensive films in Hindi cinema. Shah Rukh Khan even revealed at the WAVES Summit 2025 that he rejected a role in Takht because the character required him to wear a skirt.

Despite the setbacks, Johar's recent statements suggest a potential revival of Takht, similar to the trajectory of Dostana 2. The film's future remains uncertain, particularly regarding whether the original cast can be retained.

Meanwhile, Karan Johar's last directorial venture was the 2023 romantic comedy Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. He is also planning an action film and has several productions in the pipeline, including Dhadak 2, Naagzilla, and Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri.
