The New York Islanders have locked up defenseman Alexander Romanov with a massive eight-year, $50 million contract extension, carrying an annual cap hit of $6.25 million. The deal, announced on Monday, secures Romanov's place on the Islanders' blue line through 2033.

Romanov, who was set to become a restricted free agent on Tuesday, has solidified his role as a key defenseman for the Islanders. Last season, the 25-year-old tallied four goals and 20 points in 64 games while averaging over 22 minutes of ice time per game. He also posted a plus-5 rating, which tied for third-best on the team.

While not known for his offensive prowess, Romanov is valued for his strong defensive play and penalty-killing abilities. His average ice time of 22:18 this season and consistent presence on the second penalty kill unit demonstrate his importance to the team.

The Islanders acquired Romanov from the Montreal Canadiens during the 2022 NHL Draft. In Montreal, he signed a three-year contract for $3.53 million. Following the trade to the Islanders, Romanov signed a three-year, $7.5 million extension in August 2022.

With this extension, the Islanders have solidified their defensive core for the long term. Adam Pelech is under contract until 2029, Ryan Pulock and Scott Mayfield until 2030, and now Romanov until 2033. The team also has prospect Matthew Schaefer.

The length of the deal is notable, especially considering the Islanders have invested in several young, left-shot defensemen in recent drafts, including Schaefer, Aitcheson, and Pulkkinen. Calle Odelius and Isaiah George are also in the system. The team's commitment to Romanov suggests he is viewed as a vital component of their future success.

General Manager Mathieu Darche has made a significant commitment with this contract extension. The contract does not include any trade protection. This move also raises questions about the future of Adam Pelech with the team.
