A massive cloudburst in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, on August 5, 2025, triggered devastating flash floods that swept away homes, hotels, and people in the Dharali area. The disaster has resulted in at least four deaths, with many more feared missing. Initial reports suggest that 40-50 houses have been washed away, and over 50 people are missing.
The cloudburst occurred in the upper catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river, causing it to overflow with immense force. The resulting flash floods tore through Dharali, a town situated 8,600 feet above sea level and a key stopover for pilgrims en route to Gangotri. Videos from the area show a torrent of water rushing down, swallowing homes and causing widespread panic. One villager told PTI that 20-25 hotels and guesthouses may have been lost.
Rescue operations are underway, with teams from the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) deployed to the affected areas. The Indian Army rescued approximately 20 people in the initial hours. Overall, authorities have rescued 130 people. The Army's Ibex Brigade, along with other disaster management forces, mobilized swiftly for rescue operations. Despite the Indian Army having 8-10 soldiers missing from a camp in lower Harsil, they continue to engage in rescue operations. ITBP has rescued 37 villagers. The NDRF has deployed a team of cadaver dogs to help locate those feared dead.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his grief and assured swift action, stating that relief efforts are ongoing on a war footing. He is in constant contact with senior officials and monitoring the situation closely. Dhami also stated that 70-80 people have been evacuated to a safe place. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have assured the Uttarakhand government of full support from the central government.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Uttarakhand, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days. A second cloudburst was reported in Sukhi Top, another tourist location in Uttarkashi. In light of the rain alert, a holiday has been declared for all schools and Anganwadi centers in Almora, Pithoragarh, Chamoli, and Rudraprayag districts.
The Uttarkashi police have issued an advisory urging residents to exercise caution and avoid going near rivers and streams. They have also asked residents to dial 112 for assistance. Road connectivity has been impacted in the region, and efforts are underway to restore it. Roads in Gasku and Malghat are closed, and the Jyotirmath-Malari motor road has been washed out near Saldhar.
The disaster has prompted reactions from various leaders, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP chief JP Nadda expressing concern and assuring support.
