The Kerala Congress is grappling with a significant dilemma regarding the future of Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil, who is facing accusations of sexual misconduct. While senior leaders are reportedly signaling that his continuation as an MLA may harm the party's image, the possibility of by-elections is creating hesitation in making a final decision.

Rahul Mamkoottathil, a first-time MLA, has found himself increasingly isolated within the party following allegations of inappropriate behavior. The issue gained traction after actress Rini Ann George accused a "young leader" of a well-known political party of misbehavior. Although she did not directly name Mamkoottathil, the allegations led to protests by the BJP and the DYFI, the youth wing of the ruling CPI(M). Facing mounting pressure, Mamkoottathil resigned from his position as the state president of the Youth Congress.

Despite the allegations and calls for his resignation, Mamkoottathil has denied any wrongdoing and alleged a conspiracy against him. He has also apologized to the public and party workers for the situation. Amidst rumors of his potential resignation as MLA, he released an audio clip purportedly showing a transgender person stating that a reporter had inquired about any misconduct on his part.

Several senior Congress leaders, including Ramesh Chennithala and reportedly Leader of Opposition V. D. Satheesan, are said to be in favor of Mamkoottathil's resignation to protect the party's image. However, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief Sunny Joseph stated that an appropriate decision would be made after discussions with senior leaders, considering everyone's views.

The primary concern delaying a final decision appears to be the potential impact of a by-election in Palakkad. Sources within the Congress camp have expressed worries that a by-poll could negatively affect the party's prospects. In the previous two elections, the BJP secured the second position in Palakkad, raising concerns that they might gain if a by-election were held. K Muraleedharan, another senior Congress leader, stated that he does not believe there is any need for an election in Palakkad in the current situation and added that if the LDF does not want a BJP legislator from there, the saffron party will not win that assembly seat.

The situation has placed the Congress party in a difficult position. While the allegations against Mamkoottathil are damaging the party's reputation, the potential consequences of a by-election are giving leaders pause. The local body elections are due this year, and assembly polls are due before next May, adding urgency to the matter.

Meanwhile, the CPM and BJP have already started their election campaigns. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has visited Kerala multiple times to hold meetings with BJP leaders. The CPM is focusing on strategies to appeal to voters as the elections approach. Congress is struggling to mitigate the damage caused by the allegations against Mamkootathil.

The Congress leadership is carefully weighing its options, considering the ethical implications of the allegations, the potential damage to the party's image, and the strategic risks associated with a by-election. The coming days are crucial as the party seeks to find a resolution that balances these competing concerns and safeguards its political future in Kerala.
