A 28-year-old woman, Nikki Bhati, was allegedly set on fire by her husband, Vipin Bhati, in their Greater Noida home on August 21, 2025. The altercation reportedly stemmed from Nikki's desire to reopen a beauty parlor she used to run and her activity on Instagram, where she posted reels. Vipin, 28, allegedly told her that such activities were "not allowed" in their family, which led to a heated argument and ultimately, the fatal assault.

According to police reports, the incident occurred around 3:30 pm when Nikki informed Vipin of her plans to reopen the parlor. Vipin opposed the idea, stating his disapproval of her running a parlor and posting reels. The situation escalated, with Vipin allegedly assaulting Nikki. Nikki's sister, Kanchan, who is married to Vipin's brother and also lives in the same household, reported that Vipin's mother, Daya Bhati, handed him an inflammable liquid, which he then used to set Nikki on fire. Nikki was rushed to the hospital but died en route.

Vipin Bhati was arrested on Saturday. While being taken by police to recover the flammable material, he attempted to escape and was shot in the leg. He is currently hospitalized and in custody. Nikki's mother-in-law, Daya Bhati, 55, was also arrested on Sunday.

The family of the deceased has alleged that Vipin and his family killed Nikki over dowry demands. They claim that the in-laws were demanding ₹36 lakh and a Scorpio. Nikki's sister, Kanchan, stated that both she and Nikki were being tortured for dowry. She recounted an incident where she was assaulted and told that she was "better off dead" since they had not received dowry for her. She also mentioned that Nikki was attacked in front of her and the children before being set ablaze. However, police stated they are investigating the case from all angles, as the couple had been married for around eight-and-a-half years. Police also noted Vipin showed "no remorse" for his actions.

The incident was partially recorded on video by Kanchan, who sought to document the abuse Nikki had been enduring. The videos depict a man pouring liquid on Nikki, Vipin assaulting her, and Nikki engulfed in flames while coming down the stairs. Nikki's six-year-old son reportedly witnessed the horrific crime.

The case has sparked outrage, with many calling for justice for Nikki. Social media platforms are trending with #JusticeForNikki. The incident has also drawn attention to the issue of dowry-related violence and the restrictions placed on women in some families.
