Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a workshop for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Members of Parliament (MPs) on Sunday, where a resolution was passed commending the government's Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms. The workshop, known as "Sansad Karyashala," was held at the GMC Balayogi Auditorium in the Parliament complex.
In what was described as a rare gesture, Modi chose to sit among the MPs in the last row of the auditorium, participating as an ordinary member. BJP MP Ravi Kishan shared a photo on X, emphasizing that every worker is a part of the BJP.
The workshop included different sessions where the Prime Minister shared his views and suggestions with MPs divided into various groups. The primary focus of the workshop's opening day revolved around two central themes: "Towards a Developed India by 2027" and "Effective Use of Social Media by MPs". Discussions encompassed key sectors like agriculture, defense, energy, education, railways, and transport. Sessions also addressed preparations for the upcoming parliamentary session, parliamentary procedures, subordinate legislation, and effective time management within the House.
The resolution passed at the workshop specifically endorsed the GST reforms recently approved by the GST Council on September 3. These reforms mark a significant overhaul of India's indirect tax system, with the Council's decision leading to a reduction in the number of tax slabs and a decrease in rates across a broad spectrum of essential goods and services. The new structure will primarily consist of two main slabs, 5% and 18%, with a higher rate of 40% applying to sin goods.
These revisions align with the Prime Minister's Independence Day address, where he assured the middle class of GST framework relief. Government officials have stated that the revised structure aims to increase disposable income for ordinary citizens, stimulating consumption and boosting economic growth. Many essential items, including groceries, footwear, textiles, fertilizers, and renewable energy products, will become more affordable under the revised slabs. Goods previously taxed at 12% and 28% have largely been shifted into the two primary categories, easing the financial burden on households. The government anticipates that these reforms will provide relief to the middle class and inject fresh momentum into the economy.
The BJP is planning a nationwide outreach program to highlight the benefits of the GST reforms. The workshop also included materials showcasing the benefits of the latest GST reforms and other government achievements.
The second day of the workshop will focus on training MPs for the Vice Presidential elections scheduled for September 9. BJP MP Jagdambika Pal noted that the party regularly organizes workshops to guide MPs on their roles in their constituencies, covering development, public contact, outreach, national and international developments, and practical aspects.
