India is set to elect its new Vice President today, September 9, 2025, following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar. The election pits C P Radhakrishnan, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate and current Governor of Maharashtra, against B Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge backed by the opposition INDIA bloc.
The electoral college for the Vice-Presidential election consists of 781 Members of Parliament (MPs) from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The voting process is scheduled to take place in Room No. F-101, Vasudha, Parliament House, commencing at 10:00 AM and concluding at 5:00 PM. The votes will be cast through a secret ballot. Counting will begin at 6 PM, with results expected in the evening.
C P Radhakrishnan, a seasoned BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, is being projected as an experienced and untainted leader. He previously served as a two-time Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government. The opposition's candidate, B Sudershan Reddy, is a retired Supreme Court judge from Telangana, known for key judgements, including declaring Salwa Judum illegal and unconstitutional.
The NDA appears to have a numerical advantage, with an estimated 425 MPs. The BJP accounts for 342 members in both houses. The opposition camp has approximately 324 MPs, with the Congress party holding 126 members. Certain parties remain unaligned. The YSR Congress has pledged its support to Radhakrishnan. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has announced they will boycott the election.
Political analysts suggest that Radhakrishnan is likely to receive backing from at least 437 members, exceeding the required 391 votes needed to secure victory. Reddy is expected to get around 323 votes.
Both alliances have been actively engaging with their respective MPs, holding meetings and mock sessions to familiarize them with the voting procedure and minimize the risk of invalid votes. Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde chaired a meeting of Shiv Sena MPs in New Delhi, where Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal briefed members about the voting process. The NDA has appointed Kiren Rijiju, Shrikant Shinde, and Ram Mohan Naidu as its polling agents. On the opposition side, Nasir Hussain, Manickam Tagore, and Shaktisinh Gohil will serve as polling agents for the INDIA bloc.
