The legal battle surrounding the ₹30,000 crore estate of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur has intensified, drawing in his former wife, actress Karisma Kapoor, and his widow, Priya Sachdev. Sunjay Kapur, who was the chairman of Sona Comstar, passed away on June 12, 2025, in London. His death has triggered a family dispute, primarily between his children from his marriage to Karisma Kapoor—Samaira and Kiaan—and Priya Sachdev, his wife at the time of his death.
Samaira and Kiaan have filed a plea in the Delhi High Court, alleging that Priya Sachdev has presented a forged will to exclude them from their rightful share of their father's estate. They are seeking a share in their father's assets and have requested an injunction against the transfer or disposal of any assets. Karisma Kapoor is representing her children in this legal battle.
Amidst these allegations, Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, is also a party to the case. Her lawyer, Vaibhav Gaggar, has stated that the "real fight" is between Karisma Kapoor and Priya Sachdev, concerning the validity of the will. He clarified that while Rani Kapur is impacted by the dispute, she will file her response to the court, revealing her stance. Gaggar emphasized that Rani Kapur has been named as the third defendant in her capacity as a Class 1 heir of Sunjay Kapur.
Priya Sachdev's legal representative, Rajiv Nayar, has countered the claims made by Karisma Kapoor's children, asserting that they are already beneficiaries of a trust and received ₹1,900 crore just before filing the case. Nayar questioned Karisma's involvement, pointing out that she and Sunjay had separated years ago, and she had been "nowhere to be seen for the last 15 years". He further implored the court to have sympathy for Sunjay, who passed away while playing polo.
The Delhi High Court has taken up the plea filed by Karisma Kapoor's children and has directed Priya Sachdev to submit a comprehensive list of all movable and immovable assets of Sunjay Kapur as of June 12, 2025. The court has also asked Priya Sachdev's counsel why she was reluctant to provide a copy of the will to Karisma Kapoor's children.
Sunjay Kapur's personal life was marked by multiple marriages and divorces. He was first married to fashion designer Nandita Mahtani in 1996, a union that lasted four years. In 2003, he married Karisma Kapoor, and they had two children, Samaira and Kiaan. Karisma and Sunjay filed for divorce by mutual consent in 2014; however, the proceedings became contentious, and the divorce was finalized in 2016. Sunjay Kapur then married Priya Sachdev in 2017, and they have a son named Azarias.
Adding another layer to the complex situation, Sunjay Kapur's sister, Mandhira Kapur, has alleged that Priya Sachdev and other relatives pressured their mother, Rani Kapur, into signing documents at a vulnerable time. She claims that Rani Kapur was unaware of what she was signing and that the family has not shared copies of the documents despite repeated requests. Rani Kapur has also raised concerns about the management of Sona Comstar following her son's death, further fueling the dispute.
The legal battle over Sunjay Kapur's estate is expected to be a prolonged one, with complex questions of ownership, succession rights, and the validity of the will at the forefront. The court has scheduled the matter for further hearing on October 9.
