The widespread protests in Nepal have taken a tragic turn for an Indian couple visiting Kathmandu. Ramveer Singh Gola from Ghaziabad, along with his wife Rajesh Gola, had traveled to Nepal to visit the Pashupatinath Temple. Amidst the escalating chaos and violence, a fire broke out in their hotel, forcing them to make a desperate attempt to escape by jumping from the fourth floor.
The couple sustained injuries from the fall, and were separated in the aftermath. Tragically, Ramveer Singh's son received news on Wednesday that his mother, Rajesh Gola, had died. Ramveer Singh is injured.
The protests, initially sparked by a government ban on social media platforms, have evolved into a broader movement reflecting the discontent of Nepalese Gen Z with alleged corruption and government apathy. The situation has deteriorated rapidly, with reports of arson, attacks on hotels, and widespread unrest. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned in response to the escalating protests.
The Hilton Hotel in Kathmandu was set ablaze by protestors. Other reports indicate protesters torched the houses of the President, Prime Minister, and ministers. The Nepal Parliament, Supreme Court, and multiple government buildings also went up in flames.
The Indian government has taken notice of the escalating crisis. An advisory has been issued, urging Indian citizens in Nepal to remain indoors. The Ministry of Civil Aviation is arranging additional flights in coordination with Air India and Indigo to help bring back stranded Indian tourists. Airlines have also been advised to maintain reasonable fare levels during this period. Stranded tourists from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Maharashtra are pleading for help.
The unrest has led to a chaotic situation, with reports of over 15,000 prisoners escaping from 25 prisons across Nepal. The Kathmandu Post reported this was one of the largest jailbreaks in the country.
The protests have resulted in a significant number of casualties. Nepal's health ministry reported on Wednesday that 30 people have died and over 1,000 have been injured. The ministry also stated that 713 injured individuals have been discharged from hospitals, while 253 have been newly admitted, and 55 patients have been referred to other facilities.
As the situation remains tense, the Nepal Army has been deployed to maintain security in Kathmandu. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has provided helpline numbers for Indian citizens who require assistance.
