The legal battle surrounding the inheritance of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur has intensified, drawing attention to the complexities and emotional challenges within the Kapur family. At the heart of the dispute is Sunjay Kapur's ₹30,000 crore estate, with his children from his previous marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan, seeking their rightful share. They have accused Sunjay's widow, Priya Sachdeva Kapur, of forging his will to gain complete control over his assets.

The Delhi High Court is currently hearing the plea filed by Karisma Kapoor's children. The children's legal team, led by Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, has argued that the purported will is unregistered, was never disclosed earlier, and was read "in haste" at the Taj Hotel, raising suspicions of forgery. They further allege that Priya Kapur restricted their access to trust documents and only revealed the will, dated March 21, 2025, more than seven weeks after Sunjay's death. The children assert their entitlement to a share of their father's property as legal heirs under the Hindu Succession Act, 1956.

Priya Sachdeva Kapur, represented by Senior Advocates Rajiv Nayar and Shyel Trehan, has claimed that the suit is not maintainable. Her legal team stated that Samaira and Kiaan had already received assets worth ₹1,900 crore from the Rani Kapur Trust, the Kapur family trust, just days before filing the suit. They questioned the children's motives, implying that their demands were excessive. Priya's lawyers have also urged the court to show "some sympathy for the soul of the deceased".

Adding another layer to the dispute, Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, has also intervened, raising concerns about her own rights under the trust. Represented by Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, Rani Kapur claimed that she was pressured to sign certain documents after her son's passing and that her rights under the trust had been eroded after Priya Kapur's marriage. Her lawyer has also suggested that the real fight is between Karisma Kapoor and Priya Sachdev over the will.

Amid the legal proceedings, a new twist emerged with the revelation that Sunjay Kapur was allegedly facilitating Portuguese citizenship for Karisma Kapoor and their children. Documents annexed to the suit indicate steps were being taken towards securing overseas nationality for the family.

Sunjay Kapur's sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, has also voiced her support for Samaira and Kiaan. She questioned the validity of the will, stating that it was "bizarre" that it disinherited them.

On September 10, 2025, during a hearing, the Delhi High Court directed Priya Kapur to submit details of all of Sunjay Kapur's movable and immovable assets. However, a written order initially recorded the presence of lawyers for Mandhira Kapur, even though she had not been formally included in the case. Priya Kapur subsequently sought rectification of the order, arguing that Mandhira's counsel had not been present or made submissions. The court clarified that Mandhira is not a party to the suit.

The next hearing is scheduled for October 9, 2025. The court is expected to examine the materials presented and further address the allegations of forgery and the validity of the will. The outcome of this legal battle will determine the rightful heirs to Sunjay Kapur's estate and could have significant implications for the Kapur family.
