Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir is experiencing an uneasy calm following the detention of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA). While prohibitory orders remain in effect, some relaxation has been granted for Friday prayers.
Tensions have been high since Malik's arrest, with some areas witnessing protests, tear gas shelling, and baton charges by police. Malik's detention was triggered by accusations of disturbing public order through "provocative speeches and abusive language" on social media. He has since been moved to Kathua jail.
In anticipation of Friday prayers, the administration has taken measures to maintain peace. Additional forces have been deployed in sensitive areas such as Doda town, Gandoh, Bhalessa, and Thathri. Police patrols have been intensified, and concertina wires have been placed in strategic locations. Religious leaders and prominent citizens have been urged to encourage calm, especially among the youth.
While restrictions on movement are unlikely to be completely lifted, authorities provided some relaxation for Friday prayers. In Bhalessa, a two-hour relaxation was given to the public to buy essential items.
Mobile internet and Wi-Fi services remain suspended as a precautionary measure. Schools, which had been closed due to heavy rains, remain shut due to the ongoing tensions.
DIG Shridhar Patil, who chaired a peace committee meeting, said that efforts are underway to restore complete normalcy. He noted that the situation is largely under control and that many of the detained protestors have been released on bonds.
Malik's father has appealed to authorities for his son's release. He stated that he met with the Chief Minister, who said he would look into the matter.
