A woman in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, India, was seen assaulting her husband with slippers outside a courthouse after he allegedly gave her triple talaq. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
The woman stated that she married her husband in 2018. Soon after the marriage, her husband and his family allegedly began demanding dowry and physically abusing her, especially after she gave birth to two daughters. She further accused her husband of taking away their children after she filed for maintenance.
On the day of the incident, the woman appeared in court with her maternal aunt for a hearing regarding her suit for financial support. Her husband was present with his father. As she exited the court, she claims her husband and father-in-law followed her, hurled abuses, and pressured her to withdraw the case. The woman alleges that her husband, at the instigation of his father, pronounced talaq three times and then both men assaulted her.
In response, the woman retaliated in self-defense by removing her slippers and hitting her husband repeatedly. According to one report, she landed five blows in five seconds. During the altercation, his kurta was torn. People at the court complex recorded the incident, and the video was widely circulated on social media.
The woman stated that she had no choice but to defend herself after they hit her first. She is now seeking custody of her children and legal action against her husband.
According to reports, the couple has been in dispute for about a year, and the wife has been living separately with her daughters. She filed a case in court seeking financial support from her husband.
Following the incident, the woman went to the Civil Lines police station to file a complaint, but she alleges that the police only gave her assurances and did not register a case. She then submitted an application to the Superintendent of Police (SP) seeking action. The SP, Vidya Sagar Mishra, stated that the matter is being investigated and action will be taken based on the evidence.
Advocate Shahab Shakir, who witnessed the incident, stated that the case between the husband and wife concerns Section 125 of the legal code, which deals with claims for maintenance.
