Jitank Singh Gurjar's debut film, Vimukt (In Search of the Sky), has been awarded the NETPAC Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film was honored at the 50th anniversary edition of TIFF. The NETPAC Award is presented annually by the Network for the Promotion of Asian Pacific Cinema to a standout feature film from the Asia-Pacific region.
The jury described Vimukt as “a truly independent achievement”. They lauded the film for "offering an indelible tale of tolerance, desperation and faith, conveyed through a unique lens of realism and poetics, elevated by striking performances". Robyn Citizen, TIFF’s director of programming, described the film as being about parents caring for their son with cognitive disabilities in a community that wants to exclude him because he is different.
Vimukt is set in a rural community in Madhya Pradesh. The film tells the story of an impoverished elderly couple tasked with caring for their cognitively challenged adult son. Facing threats from the villagers, they seek hope in the Maha Kumbh Mela pilgrimage. The film was the sole Indian entry selected for TIFF's Centrepiece programme. Most of the film was shot in Prayagraj during the Mahakumbh Mela and in the Barai and Patwa villages in Madhya Pradesh.
Gurjar expressed immense gratitude to the cast and crew for their contribution to this "historic" win. He stated that the win was for the entire crew and the people who believed in the film. Pooja Vishal Sharma, the film's producer, expressed her joy and reaffirmed her belief in backing raw, real, and transformative stories. She called Vimukt a "labor of love" and expressed her delight in seeing it connect with the world on such a prestigious platform.
Vimukt stars theatre actors Meghna Agarwal, Raghvendra Bhadoriya, and Nikhil S Yadav in lead roles. The film features cinematography by Shelly Sharma, who also served as executive producer alongside Tushar Tyagi. Pavan Therukar was the editor, and Manish Kumar composed the original score.
Another Indian film, Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, was the second runner-up for the International People's Choice Award. The International People's Choice Award went to Park Chan-wook's Korean film, No Other Choice, while Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value was the first runner-up. The People's Choice Award was won by Chloe Zhao's Hamnet.
