The village of Mudhiya Jain, in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, is in deep mourning following the tragic deaths of six labourers in the recent Uttarakhand cloudburst. The cloudburst and heavy rains in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, led to a sudden flood in the Tons River near Vikas Nagar on Tuesday, sweeping away a tractor-trolley carrying 14 workers. Twelve of these workers were from Moradabad, and two were from Sambhal.
The deceased have been identified as Madan, Naresh, Harcharan, Somwati, Reena, and Kiran, all residents of Mudhiya Jain. Three others from the village are still missing. Five of the deceased were from the same family: Harcharan Singh, his wife Somwati, their son Horam, and Horam's wife Reena. Harcharan's other son, Rajkumar, is still missing and feared dead. Two other workers sustained injuries in the incident.
"We had never imagined that such a disaster could happen," recounted Kavita, Harcharan's daughter. The entire village, located approximately 40 kilometers from the district headquarters, has been plunged into despair. Many households have not lit their stoves, and the sound of sobbing echoes through the streets.
Local authorities are providing support to the bereaved families. The District Magistrate of Moradabad, Anuj Singh, and Senior Superintendent of Police, Satpal Antil, were present in the village to offer support and ensure proper arrangements for the last rites. Disaster response teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local administration are continuing the search for the missing.
The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, has announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of each of the deceased. He has also directed officials to assist in transporting the deceased back to their village.
The cloudburst in Uttarakhand caused widespread destruction. In Dehradun, thirteen fatalities have been reported, including the eight residents of Moradabad. The heavy rains caused swollen rivers to wash away buildings, roads, and bridges. As floodwater recedes, the scale of destruction becomes clearer, with maximum damage occurring in Maldevta and Sahastradhara. The Rispana and Bindal rivers are in spate, posing a threat to nearby houses.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Uttarakhand, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning. The Char Dham Yatra has been suspended for 24 hours due to the severe weather.
