Anurag Kashyap is making headlines as he gears up for the release of his new film Nishaanchi, a crime drama set in Uttar Pradesh. In recent interviews, the director has discussed various aspects of the film, his casting choices, and his relationships with other figures in the film industry.

One of the most notable aspects of Nishaanchi is the debut of Aaishvary Thackeray, grandson of Bal Thackeray, in a double role. Kashyap explained that he selected Aaishvary based on his potential as an actor, not his family name. He was impressed by Aaishvary's showreel, which included a monologue originally performed by Manoj Bajpayee. Kashyap said he wasn't even aware of Aaishvary's background until after their initial meeting. He emphasized that Aaishvary had to commit fully to the film, not taking on any other acting projects during its production. Kashyap praised Aaishvary's dedication and willingness to take on the challenging double role, noting his ability to transform himself physically and emotionally for the parts. The director even admitted that he initially withheld the information about the double role from Aaishvary to prevent him from overthinking it.

Kashyap has described Nishaanchi as a "desi" film with a classic crime and punishment theme. He also mentioned that the film is influenced by classic Hindi cinema and contains elements of emotion, betrayal, and action. He wanted to showcase the consequences of crime and avoid glorifying it. The film tells an emotional story about actions, consequences, family, and brotherhood.

In several interviews, Kashyap has spoken about his relationships with other prominent figures in the film industry. He addressed his past issues with the late Sushant Singh Rajput, revealing that he had initially considered Sushant for the lead role in Nishaanchi. However, communication ceased after Sushant signed on to bigger projects with major production houses. Kashyap admitted to regretting not responding to Sushant's request to collaborate just weeks before his death. He shared a past WhatsApp chat where he called Sushant "too problematic". Kashyap recognized that Sushant's decisions were driven by a desire for validation from top banners, a common path for outsiders in Bollywood.

Kashyap also discussed his bond with Manoj Bajpayee, describing their friendship as enduring and candid. He acknowledged Bajpayee's comments about him being "too emotional" and admitted that Bajpayee's tough love has shaped him. Kashyap admires Bajpayee's discipline and longevity in the industry, noting his continuous evolution as an actor. He also shared a story about playfully touching Manoj Bajpayee's feet at a recent event. Bajpayee, in turn, has spoken highly of Kashyap, though also pointing out Kashyap's tendency to make enemies and act impulsively. Bajpayee has also observed that Kashyap tends to support others readily, even to his own detriment.

Reflecting on his early career, Kashyap spoke about his experiences working with Ram Gopal Varma. He mentioned creative differences during the making of Satya, where he served as a writer. Kashyap recalled arguing with Varma about scenes and dialogue, with Varma often telling him to save his ideas for his own films. Despite these disagreements, Kashyap credits Varma's vision for the film's success. Kashyap has also stated that he doesn't want to repeat the mistakes Varma made, such as managing too many projects simultaneously and micromanaging directors. He prefers to act as an "enabler" for filmmakers, supporting their vision without interfering. Despite past friction, Kashyap considers RGV his mentor and appreciates his generosity.

Nishaanchi is scheduled to be released in theaters on September 19, 2025.
