Artur Akhtyamov is solidifying his role within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, providing valuable depth in the goaltending position. The Maple Leafs have seen their goaltending depth tested in recent seasons, making the emergence of prospects like Akhtyamov all the more crucial.

Akhtyamov, a 23-year-old Russian netminder, was drafted by the Maple Leafs in the fourth round (106th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft. After spending time in both the KHL and VHL, he made the move to North America to play for the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL).

In his first season with the Marlies, Akhtyamov posted a record of 11-8-4 with a 2.81 goals-against average (GAA) and a .901 save percentage (SV%). While his play dipped a bit after a strong start, he demonstrated his potential and adaptability to the North American game. Marlies head coach John Gruden admitted he "didn't know what to expect" from Akhtyamov but was impressed by his demeanor and ability to handle pressure.

Akhtyamov's performance in the Maple Leafs' preseason game against the Ottawa Senators further highlighted his development. He stopped 16 of 17 shots in 30 minutes of play, showcasing his poise and solid technique. One notable save on Claude Giroux during a two-on-one opportunity exemplified his skill and ability to read the play.

The Maple Leafs' current NHL goaltending tandem consists of Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll. With Dennis Hildeby also in the mix, Akhtyamov may not see NHL action this season unless injuries create an opportunity. However, his continued growth and strong AHL play could position him for an NHL spot in the future.

Akhtyamov himself is eager to continue his development in Toronto. He recently expressed his desire to sign an extension with the Maple Leafs, stating, "I need to work, and we'll see. My work is to stop the puck. I hope so. I hope I will sign a new contract with the Maple Leafs". His current entry-level deal pays him $851,000 per season, and given his desire to stay in Toronto, the Leafs may be able to re-sign him for a similar salary.

The Maple Leafs' organizational depth in net has improved significantly in recent years. With prospects like Akhtyamov and Hildeby developing in the AHL, the team has a promising pipeline of goaltenders. Akhtyamov's progress is particularly encouraging, as he continues to demonstrate his ability to perform against both NHL-level and AHL-level competition. His strong showing in the preseason game against the Senators reinforces the notion that he is a valuable asset to the Maple Leafs organization.
