During his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 23, 2025, US President Donald Trump repeatedly targeted India with a mix of familiar false claims and new accusations. His speech, lasting over an hour, touched on various global issues, but his remarks concerning India drew particular attention.
Trump stated that China and India are the "primary funders" of the ongoing war in Ukraine, alleging that their continued purchase of Russian oil is助長 conflict. He also expressed his dissatisfaction with some NATO nations that continue to buy Russian energy. Trump warned that if Russia does not negotiate an end to the war, the US is prepared to impose "very strong" tariffs, but only if European nations adopt the same measures.
In a move that has become a recurring theme in his public addresses, Trump claimed to have "ended seven wars" within seven months of returning to office, including a conflict between India and Pakistan. He stated that no other leader has ever accomplished anything similar, adding that he feels honored to have done it. He also suggested that he should be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for each of these achievements.
However, India has consistently refuted Trump's claim of mediating a ceasefire with Pakistan. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has stated that the issue of trade was never linked to conversations between India and the United States. India has maintained that any ceasefire was achieved through direct talks between the Indian and Pakistani militaries.
Beyond India and the war in Ukraine, Trump's speech was wide-ranging and controversial. He criticized the UN for failing to support his foreign policy initiatives and for its perceived inaction, stating, "All they seem to do is issue strongly worded letters and then never act on them". He also dismissed climate change as "the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world," criticizing green energy policies. He blamed these policies, along with unchecked immigration, for "destroying" the world and Western countries. He defended his administration's efforts to secure the US southern border and warned of the "death of Western Europe" from migration.
Trump's UNGA address was met with mixed reactions. Following his speech, Trump posted on social media that his speech was well-received.
