During his recent concert in Malaysia, Diljit Dosanjh addressed the controversy surrounding his film Sardaar Ji 3, which faced backlash and a ban in India following the Pahalgam terror attack. He clarified that the film was shot before the tragic incident in Kashmir.
Dosanjh emphasized that the film was filmed in February, prior to the attack, while the India-Pakistan cricket match occurred afterward. He stated that while he has many answers to give, he had chosen to remain silent until then. He made it clear that Sikhs could never go against the nation. Dosanjh also expressed his grief regarding the Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people, mainly tourists. He conveyed that he and others have consistently prayed for the terrorists to receive severe punishment and asserted his solidarity with India.
The film Sardaar Ji 3 features Pakistani actress Hania Aamir, which added to the controversy amid tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. Due to the ban in India, the makers of the film decided to release it internationally.
Dosanjh also addressed the media's portrayal of him, stating that the national media tried to depict him as anti-national. He criticized the media for allegedly spreading fake news and attempting to create a "versus Diljit" narrative. He defended himself by saying Punjabis and the Sikh community could never go against the nation. He further added, "That's my country's flag. Always respect".
In an earlier interview with BBC Asian Network, Diljit revealed the reason for releasing Sardaar Ji 3 despite the backlash. He explained that when the film was made, the situation was normal. However, after the shooting, circumstances changed, and the producers decided to release the film overseas since it would not be released in India.
This is not the first time Dosanjh's concerts have faced controversies. In December 2024, his Chandigarh show faced legal action for breaching noise pollution limits. He also faced social media backlash for his spelling of "Panjab" and the omission of the Indian tricolor emoji in his post. In Hyderabad, he was asked to refrain from performing songs promoting drugs and alcohol. Dosanjh has also addressed criticism surrounding tickets being sold in black for his Dil-Luminati tour. He questioned how artists were at fault for such scams.
