Telugu superstar Nagarjuna Akkineni has petitioned the Delhi High Court to safeguard his personality rights, joining a growing list of celebrities like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Karan Johar who have taken similar legal action. The Delhi High Court has stated that it will issue an order to protect the personality rights of the Telugu actor Akkineni Nagarjuna.
Justice Tejas Karia addressed Nagarjuna's plea, which voiced concerns about the unauthorized use of his image in social media content and merchandise, infringing upon his personality rights. The court indicated it would issue an order to remove such content once specific URLs are provided. Justice Karia noted that the actor had identified three categories of misuse and has identified 14 URLs so far. Advocate Pravin Anand, representing Nagarjuna, mentioned the existence of other URLs misusing the actor's image without authorization. He also brought up the unauthorized content misusing the actor's image, including AI-generated morphed images on YouTube and other platforms.
Nagarjuna's counsel emphasized the actor's considerable reputation, stating that he has acted in 95 films and received two national awards. He is known as the 'celluloid scientist' for his versatile acting style and has over 6 million Twitter followers.
The court acknowledged the long-lasting fame of such personalities and questioned how long these injunctions could continue. Ultimately, the court affirmed it would pass an order to ensure the protection of Nagarjuna's personality rights.
Nagarjuna's suit follows similar cases filed by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Karan Johar, and Anil Kapoor, among others. In these instances, the High Court has issued injunctions to prevent the unauthorized use of the celebrities' personality rights. In some cases, the images, voice, or likeness of actors have been misused for pornographic purposes, leading to orders for their removal.
The High Court recently protected Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's personality rights, observing that unauthorized exploitation of an individual's personal attributes violates their right to privacy and undermines their right to live with dignity. Similarly, Justice Karia granted relief to Karan Johar, ordering the removal of "disparaging material," including videos, memes, and social media posts.
