The recent death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore has sparked a flurry of investigation and public outcry in Assam. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by the Assam police to probe the circumstances surrounding his death. As part of the investigation, the SIT conducted raids at multiple locations in Guwahati, including the residence of Zubeen Garg's manager, Siddharth Sharma.
The SIT's search of Sharma's flat in Guwahati's Datalpara area occurred on Thursday. CID officials were present at the apartment complex in the morning before beginning the search. The apartment, a 3BHK unit on the third floor, has been home to Sharma and his family since 2019. Reports indicate that the flat was locked when the team arrived, and the lock was broken in the presence of a magistrate to allow the search to proceed. Sharma's family members have not been seen at the residence since Zubeen Garg's death. While authorities have not disclosed whether any materials were seized during the raid, the operation is believed to be aimed at uncovering potential financial or circumstantial evidence related to the singer's death.
In addition to the raid on Sharma's residence, the SIT also conducted searches at the home of Shyamkanu Mahanta, the chief organizer of the North East India Festival in Singapore where Garg was scheduled to perform. A search was also carried out at the home of Garg's sound recordist. The Assam government has blacklisted Mahanta from organizing any future events in the state.
Zubeen Garg, a prominent figure in the Assamese music industry, died in Singapore on September 19, 2025. Initial reports indicated that he drowned while swimming in the sea. According to Zubeen's wife, Garima Saikia Garg, the singer suffered a seizure while swimming at Lazarus Island. He was rescued and rushed to Singapore General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Singapore High Commission stated the cause of death as drowning.
The circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg's death have led to public demand for a thorough and transparent investigation. Multiple FIRs have been filed against Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sarma, drummer Shekharjyoti Goswami, and businessman Sanjive Narain. An advocate has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in Gauhati High Court, seeking a transfer of the case to the CBI with court monitoring, citing possible security lapses in Singapore. The plea is scheduled to be heard on November 10.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured a fair probe into Zubeen Garg's death and has stated that the government is open to recommending a CBI inquiry if the SIT investigation is found to be unsatisfactory. He urged the public to have faith in the SIT and cautioned against spreading rumors on social media that could hinder the investigation. The Chief Minister has also stated that the SIT will question those who accompanied Zubeen to Singapore.
