Sunil Chhetri's Return Completes India's Squad for Asian Cup Qualifiers: A Boost for the Team.

Sunil Chhetri is back in the fold as India prepares for the crucial AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. After being rested for the CAFA Nations Cup, the talismanic striker has been named in the 30-man probables squad by head coach Khalid Jamil. Chhetri's return brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the team as they gear up for back-to-back matches against Singapore.

India's preparatory camp commenced in Bengaluru on September 20, 2025, with the squad reporting to the city a day prior. However, the start of the camp faced a slight setback as 14 key players, including Chhetri, were initially expected to join late due to club commitments. Players from Mohun Bagan SG and FC Goa were slated to join the camp after their AFC Champions League Two engagements. Despite the delayed arrival of some players, the team is now taking shape, with Chhetri joining the camp in Bengaluru.

The Blue Tigers are set to face Singapore in two crucial 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers final round matches in Group C. The first leg will be held on October 9 in Singapore, followed by the second leg on October 14 in Margao, Goa. These matches are crucial for India's qualification hopes, and Chhetri's presence will undoubtedly boost the team's chances.

Coach Khalid Jamil emphasized the importance of striking a balance between youth and experience in the squad. While Chhetri's return provides valuable leadership, the squad also includes promising young players who are eager to make their mark. Jamil has also kept five players on standby, including two from the U-23 men's national team and three senior players.

The AFC Asian Cup is a significant tournament for India, and qualification is a top priority. With Chhetri back in the squad and a blend of youth and experience, the Blue Tigers are determined to put their best foot forward and secure a spot in the prestigious tournament.

India's U23 team is also preparing for the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers. Coached by Naushad Moosa, the team will play their matches in Doha, Qatar, against Bahrain, Qatar, and Brunei Darussalam in Group H. The U23 team had friendlies against Iraq U23s in August, which Moosa believes helped them gain confidence.
