Sister's aid in capture: Durgapur rape accused apprehended with his sister's assistance to the police.

DURGAPUR: In a surprising turn of events, the sister of the main suspect in the Durgapur gang-rape case, which occurred on October 10, 2025, played a crucial role in his apprehension. The West Bengal Police have arrested a total of five individuals in connection with the alleged gang rape of a second-year medical student.

The 23-year-old victim, originally from Jaleswar in Odisha's Balasore district, was allegedly assaulted near the private medical college where she studies. She was with a male friend when the incident occurred. According to police sources, the men initially surrounded the student and snatched her phone when she tried to call for help. The accused also allegedly offered her Rs 5,000 to leave quietly.

Following the incident, the survivor gave a statement to the college authorities, which led to the filing of an FIR and the commencement of a police investigation. The police investigation led to the arrest of three individuals initially. However, the main accused remained at large. In a twist, the sister of the primary accused, whose identity is being withheld to protect her privacy, contacted the Durgapur police and offered information about her brother's whereabouts. Sources within the police department have confirmed that her cooperation was instrumental in locating and apprehending him.

"We received credible information from a source close to the suspect, which proved vital in our operation," stated a senior police official. "Her assistance allowed us to track him down swiftly and ensure that he faces justice."

The police have not released details about why the sister decided to help them, but it is believed that she was motivated by a desire to see justice served and to distance herself and her family from the heinous crime.

All five accused, Sheikh Safiqul, Sheikh Nasiruddin, Sheikh Reajuddin, Firdos Sheikh and Apu Bauri, are now in custody and have been remanded to 10 days of police custody. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities gathering evidence and recording statements to build a strong case against the accused. The survivor is currently receiving treatment at the college hospital, and her condition is said to be stable.

The alleged gang rape has sparked widespread condemnation and outrage. Various organizations and political parties have demanded strict punishment for the perpetrators. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and has sought a report from the West Bengal police within five days.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has described the incident as "shocking" and has assured that her government has a 'zero tolerance' policy for such crimes. She has also questioned the security arrangements at private medical colleges.

This incident comes 14 months after a similar case at the RG Kar hospital, highlighting concerns about women's safety in the state. The police are under pressure to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation and to bring the accused to justice swiftly. The role of the accused's sister in his capture has been lauded by many as an example of civic responsibility and courage.
